Thursday, September 30th -- Day Five

I know it's hard to believe but one month of the school year has come and gone. I guess the old adage is true.....'time does fly when you are havin' fun'.

Period One: ELA 9
After some silent reading, we look at the correct use of some words that are often misused such as too, to, two, there, their and they're. After this, we moved on to think about different ways that each and every human being is different from one another. After five minutes of individually thinking on this topic, we opened it up to a class discussion which saw us come up with a number of great ideas. This will make more sense in our next ELA class.

Period Two: ELA 20
We collected the extension activity based on Chapter Six of `To Kill a Mockingbird` which was a letter to Boo Radley trying to coax him out of the house. We were planning to discuss the short story `The Rink`which was assigned yesterday but we never quite got to it.

Period Three/Four: Terry Fox Activities for Grade Seven to Twelve students. See more below.

Period Five: Math 7
We went over the questions assigned yesterday as a class. This took longer than expected so the assignment was not given out until 1:55. The assignment (due for Monday) is Pages 23/24, #'s 1, 2, 3 4, 6, 7, 8, & 9

Period Six: ELA 10
The period was given to make sure we are all at the same point in the novel. Those who have already reached this point (the end of Chapter Five) were to read quietly or work on other homework.

Period Seven: Math 7
The period was given to work on the assignment that was given in Period Five. This appears to be a concept that is really quite tough to grasp early. As such, any student interested in extra help, I have set up a study/tutor period for Monday at noon. Do not hesitate to come if you would like some extra help.

OTHER NEWS:

Today was the 30th Annual Terry Fox Run. Our High School students took part in some relays and games this morning as organized by the SRC. A huge thanks goes out to our SRC Executive; Allyson Grywacheski, Andria Grywacheski, Jamie Newberg and Sydney Sanders who did a tremendous job of planning a fun event for those who chose to participate. The elementary children did their walk this afternoon and enjoyed freezies and a drink upon their return. Thanks to the girls who helped with the face painting at noon; Allyson, Bailey, Kaylyn, Jamie, Andria, Sydney, Danika...anyone I missed, I am sorry but thanks.

A good day of volleyball took place yesterday after school The Grade 7/8 Girls were defeated in a close match by Sturgis. The Grade Nine girls got some revenge as they were able to defeat Sturgis while the Junior Boys were defeated in a very close match. Good Job by all teams.

I will be out of the building for the most part of tomorrow. I will try to post news and events at some point but I make no promises.

Have a great night,

Mr. Morin

Monday, September 27th -- Day Two

Again, before we get started....how about them Riders!

Period One: ELA 10
We started with some silent reading. From there we discussed the first chapter of John Wyndham's novel "The Chrysalids" and what we Know based on the reading of that chapter. We then moved on to talk about what we Want to know. A lot of good ideas came up in the conversation. From there, Chapter Two was assigned to be read and a sheet of associated activities was given. For tomorrow students need to be done up to question #7 and Chapter Two needs to be read.

Period Two: History 20
After a short Current Events discussion, we reviewed what was discussed last class. We then talked about War Plans taking place amongst the leaders of all nations involved in the war and also the idea that no matter how much training had taken place, nobody could adequatley prepare for what was in store for them. We then discussed the German War Plan in particular, a plan better known as the "Schlieffen Plan". Students were given the remainder of the period to study for the test which is tomorrow.

Period Three/Four: ELA 9
We worked towards completing the CAT - 4 Exam by completing the Reading section which gave the students an hour to complete. When done, students were asked to read silently. With any luck this test should be done by the end of the week and we can move on to more ELA related material.

Period Five: ELA 20
Assignments based on Wallace Stegner's assignment "Back to Wolf Willow" were collected. Students had been asked to imagine returning home in twenty to thirty years, and in a paragraph discuss what smell or sight they would encounter that would instantly remind them that they were indeed 'home'.

Period Six: History 30
Following a Current Events discussion, we reviewed last weeks material, in particular the Seven Years' War and the Conquest. We then discussed the difference between the terms assimilation and accomodation. From there we were introduced to the Treaty of Paris and ensuing Royal Proclamation and its impact on North America. We discussed some of the factors behind the British attempts at assimilation and steps taken in hopes of a successful assimilation. From that point on, students were asked to think about why the British might move away from a policy of assimilation and towards one of accomodation in the future (it will happen by the way). They were also asked to think about which policy they might have chosen had they been in charge at the time and explain why. These ideas/explanations are due for Wednesday.

Period Seven: ELA 20
Students were given the period to work towards completion of the activities given in Period Five. For tomorrow, all questions up to #7 are due as these are the ones dealing with Chapter Five which was to be read for today.

Thursday, September 23rd -- Day Six

Period One/Two: ELA 10
After twenty minutes of silent reading, we continued our study of the unknown. We read a poem entitled "The Ghost that Jim Saw" and answered some questions in relation to it. From that point we out our heads together and created a list of criteria that we believe make up an individual and the person that they are. They were then asked to use the criteria discussed to create their 'perfect' human being. This will make more sense soon when we start our study of the novel "The Chrysalids".

Period Three: ELA 9
We completed the Writing Conventions section of our CAT - 4 test.

Period Four: ELA 20
We discussed the questions related to Wallace Stegner's essay "Back to Wolf Willow" and the essay in general. Students were then asked to reflect on their youth and write a paragraph on the following: In thirty years from now when you come back home, what sight or smell will reinforce the fact that you are truly 'home'? Explain yourself. This paragraph is due for Monday as we do not have English tomorrow.

Period Five: History 20
We reviewed the events of last class in which we discussed the formation of The Black Hand in the Balkans and the the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. We then picked up on that today discussing the actions of Austria - Hungary towards Serbia in their dealings with this issue. Students were given a handout to read for tomorrow which outlines the array of ultimatums and declarations that would play out in the days leading up to World War I.

Period Six: ELA 1o
Our third period of the day was used as a homework/catch up/reading period.

Period Seven: History 30
A short Current Events discussion lead us right into a second discussion. Seeing as last class we discussed the Seven Years' War and The Conquest with the conclusion of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, students were asked to think about the issues that might arise for the British leaders in North America following the Conquest. We then watched the beginning of "Battle for a Continent" as part of the series Canada: A People's History. This episode discusses the Seven Years' War, Royal Proclamation and other important events of the mid 1760's.

OTHER NEWS:

Good Luck to all Cross Country runners who will be in Saltcoats tomorrow for the Annual Autumn Summit.

Good Luck to our lone member of the Preeceville Panthers football team, James Cherewyk as he and his Panther teammates host Porcupine Plain tomorrow.

Wednesday, September 22nd -- Day Five

Period One: ELA 9
We started with some silent reading for ten minutes. Paragraphs that were handed in last week were returned, along with a discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of this work. The forms were then filled out in order to start CAT - 4 (Canadian Achievement Tests). These will start tomorrow. Lesson 10 of Language Power was then assigned for tomorrow.

Period Two/Three: ELA 20
The illustrations of the Radley House were collected as they were due today. We discussed the questions that were assigned for today. Chapter Five of To Kill a Mockingbird was assigned to be read for tomorrow. At the beginning of Pd. 3, we moved onto a discussion as to what we believe we will forever remember about Norquay and 'home'. This led to a reading of Wallace Stegner's essay "Back to Wolf Willow". Once completed students were to complete questions #1, 2, 3 & 4. Time will be allowed tomorrow.

Period Four: History 30
Students were asked to share their finding on the Seven Years' War and the Conquest. This led to a handotu that discussed the Seven Years' War and its impacts on Canadian history along with the Conquest. This led to an assignment where students are to think of issues and problems that the British had to deal with following the Conquest. Also if we were in charge at the time, how would we work to solve these issues? There will be a discussion on this matter tomorrow.

Period Five: Math 7
We wrote our exam on divisibility.

Period Six: ELA 10
The last of the oral Saskatchewan Ghost Stories were told. A due date of Friday was set for the collection of "The Legend of the Monkey's Paw" assignment. Students were then given the period to work on this assignment; there will be no more class time given to complete this assignment.

Tuesday, September 21st -- Day Four

Period One: History 30
For the first time on record, our Current Events discussion brought up a grand total of zero newsworthy items; as one student put it "it's been a slow week". Anyhow, from there were moved on to a quick review of the Staples Paradigm and the problems that it presents to a nations economy. We then started to move from contact between First Nations and Europeans to actual colonization and settlements in Canada and looked at some of the realities of life in New France that was established in 1663. From there the question was asked of the class: Do you know why we are an English and not French majority within Canada? In order to start to answer this question, we took some time to research the following in order to determine what they are and their historical signifigance to Canada: The Conquest, The Seven Years' War and the Royal Proclamation. The findings will be shared and elaborated on in the days to come.

Period Two: ELA 9
After ten minutes of silent reading, students were given one final period to work on their paragraph assignment. The published, hopefully error - free paragraphs are due on or before Thursday.

Period Three/Four: ELA 20
We started by collecting the extension activities from Chapter Two of "To Kill a Mockingbird". An assignment was then given that included questions and activities on Chapters Three & Four of the novel. Students were given this time to complete this assignment, as well as the illustrations of the Radley House. Each of these assignments are due tomorrow.

Period Five: Math 7
With our quiz on divisibility taking place tomorrow, a review was given to help students prepare for tomorrow. As additional incentive to complete the review, students were told that if they return a completed review to me tomorrow and need some 'extra' marks after their exam, the completed review can help in this area.

Period Six: ELA 20
This was our 'once a six - day cycle' work/read/homework/catch - up period.

Period Seven: ELA 10
A few minutes of silent reading started the period. We then orally presented our Saskatchewan Ghost Stories. Once this was completed, we were given time to complete the 'Legend of the Monkey's Paw..."

OTHER NEWS

A quiet start to the week; look for more as the week draws to a close..

Have a good night, Mr. Morin

Monday, September 20th -- Day Three

Before we start, what a game on Friday night...Go Riders. Now on to what`s important

Period One: ELA 9
The usual ten minutes of silent reading was done at the beginning of the period. The Writing Quizzes that were completed on Friday were returned; for the most part very well done, four students with 98% or better. Students were then asked to work through steps #3 & 4 of the Writing Process (revising and sharing). It is the intention to begin publishing the good copies of these paragraphs tomorrow.

Period Three: ELA 20
The questions that were given in relation to Chapter Two of To Kill a Mockingbird were discussed; these were not for marks but rather just to spark conversation and share ideas and thoughts about the chapter. Time was then given to work towards completing some unfinished assignments, namely the extension activities from Chapter Two, the illustration of the Radley House based on descriptive language from the novel and the reading of Chapters 3 & 4. Everything but the illustration is due for tomorrow.

Period Four: ELA 10
The ten minutes of reading took place in the beginning. We then had a short discussion about the supernatural; what does it mean? What does it make us think of? Do we believe in it? We then began to read W.W. Jacobs play "The Monkey's Paw" as a class. We only managed to read Scene I.

Period Five: History 20
After a short discussion about newsworthy events in and around the world, we corrected the questions from Friday pertaining to the Balkans and the issues in that region of Europe in the early 1900's. We then took the time to make some predictions as to what role we believe this area will play in the outbreak of World War I. We then looked at arguably the incident that started the war, that being the assassination of Franz Ferdinand (the heir to the Austrian throne) by a Serbian terrorist group known as the Black Hand. We also looked at the formation of this group; their goals, their aims, etc.

Period Six: ELA 10
We finished reading "The Monkey's Paw" aloud. We then discussed what the author chose not to tell us, or leave unknown. From here students were given a writing assignment in which they are to make up the legend of the paw from the play. Where did it come from? When? Why? Who is/was responsible? What is the story behind it? How did it attain its powers? etc. This is not due for tomorrow but students will be orally presenting their ghost stories tomorrow.

Period Seven: Math 7
We collected the assignments from last day. We then set Wednesday, September 22nd as our exam date for the divisibility exam. We then took the time to review the divisibility rules and our use of them prior to the exam. Students can expect one more short review tomorrow.

OTHER NEWS:

Congratulations to the Senior Girls Volleyball team who captured first place at their tournament in Invermay on the weekend. Well done girls!

Period One: History 20
After a short Current Events discussion, we shared our ideas on how Germany could avoid having to fight a two - front war with Russia and France. A lot of good ideas came up; well done. From here we looked at the last of the major alliances leading up to World War I with the England joining France and Russia in the Triple Alliance in 1907.

Period Two: ELA 9
We started with some silent reading, and then moved onto working on our culminating activity as a part of the paragraph writing unit. Each student is to choose a topic, or theme and write a descriptive, narrative, informative and persuasive paragraph on that topic. This morning we worked on Step One of the Writing Process.

Period Three: History 3o
We had a brief Current Events discussion followed by a look at some of the issues that arose with the fur trade as a business, those being the idea of the staples paradigm, the boom and bust markets and resource depletion. These economic realities have their roots in Canada in the fur trade but continue to exist today. We then watched some more of Episode #1 of Canada: A People's History; this time it talked heavily about the actions of Henry Hudson, his discovery of the Bay named for him as well as the mutiny that followed.

Period Five: Math 7
We took one last whirl through the rules of divisibility to ensure all students are familar and comfortable with these rules. A quiz may be coming soon..wink wink.. Secondly we looked at writing to explain our thinking when it comes to mathematics. As such, three problems were assigned where I am looking not only for the correct answer but also a written explanation of how they reached that point.

Period Six: ELA 10
After some silent reading, we collected and discussed at length the mystery that played out in Agatha Christie's murder mystery "The Third Floor Flat". A lot of good detective work done, as many of the students had most of the importance details figured out, if not all of them.

Period Seven: ELA 9
After some silent reading, students were asked to complete Step 1 of the Writing Process. If they chose they were allowed to study for tomorrow's quiz on writing.

I will be out of the building tomorrow, so no posting until Monday.

After some silent reading, we discussed the first half of the short story "The Third Floor Flat" which was to be done for today. Students had an opportunity to share their ideas as to who might be the killer in the story. From this point, students were asked to read the remainder of the story as well as complete some questions and activities related to the story. Students should also be working to know the details of their chosen ghost story as they will be told orally on Monday.

Period Three: ELA 9
We started with some silent reading. From there, a quiz date was set for a short exam on what has been studied thus far in terms of writing; namely the Writing Process, Elements of an Effective Paragraph, Strategies for effective topic sentences, purposes for writing, as well as RAFTS (prompting). We then took a closer look at what the acronym RAFTS (Role, Audience, Format, Topic, Strong Verb) was all about.

Period Four: ELA 20

We then started an assignment in which each student is to create their own military strategy that they think would help eliminate Germany having to fight this two - front war. Students were asked to not only create a plan but also to explain why their plan would be successful.

Period Six: ELA 10

Time was given to complete Part B of the activities for the short story "The Metaphor" by Budge Wilson. After this, a short quiz was given on Chapter One of "To Kill a Mockingbird". This was not recorded as it was moreless a way for me to check who actually completed the reading as assigned. Chapter Two of "To Kill a Mockingbird" needs to be completed by tomorrow.

Period Four: History 30
After a short Current Events discussion, we talked about our responses to questions posed last day in regard to the fur trade in Canada. We then took down some notes that discussed the exploitation of both the land and people that came about as a result of the fur trade. Wednesday, September 8th -- Day One

Once around the six day cycle, a few more to go....

Sorry about no post yesterday; I was away at a High School Golf Tournament in Esterhazy.

Period One: History 20
After a short Current Events discussion, we discussed yesterday's visitor. From what I was told it was informative and eye - opening.
Students were given a handout which was discussed as a class. It dealt with the establishment of the Dual Alliance between Germany and Austria - Hungary. We also talked about the Russians shocking most of Europe at the time and looking to Germany for friendship.
Two assignments were given. The first one requires the students to put themselves in the shoes of Otto von Bismarck circa 1880. Why is the thought of having to fight both France and Russia at the same time so concerning? Explain yourself.
The second assignment is a timeline of steps and measures taken by Otto von Bismarck. Not only do they need to accurately create this timeline but each event needs an explanation as to why that step was taken and how it benefitted Germany. The first assignment is due tomorrow but not the timeline.

Period Two: ELA 9
After some silent reading, Lessons 4, 5 & 6 of Language Power were corrected. From this point, we discussed more about the elements of an effective paragraph, namely the body and concluding sentences. What are they? What purpose do they serve? Etc.

Period Three: History 30
After a Current Events discussion, we quickly reviewed last class and First Nations beliefs/values in relation to the land around us. We then discussed how these ideas were somewhat different from those beliefs we hold. We then looked at European ideals/beliefs about the land and the manner in how the two differed. Students were then asked to think about and be able to respond to some questions about trade between First Nations and Europeans for tomorrow.

Period Five: Math 7
Assignments from last week were returned; well done by all!!!
We then started to look at divisibility. To start students were each given a random number of manipulatives (Fancy name for blocks). They were to count how many they had. Using these blocks before them, they were asked to determine whether or not the number they had was divisibly by two, five and ten. After the process was gone through, we were able to generalize and establish some rules for divisibility as it comes to factors of two, five and ten. A short assignment pertaining to this was then assigned and is due for Friday.

Period Six: ELA 10
After some silent reading, a quick check was done to monitor the progress of students as it comes to the completion of two assignments. The good copy of the "Bucket List" is due tomorrow. If done they are to work towards completing "The Legend of...." assignment which is due on Friday.

Period Seven: ELA 9
After some silent reading, we introduced the idea of purposes for writing. What is a purpose for writing? Why do we have purposes for writing? The first of four to be discussed in class, that being Informative writing. Students were then asked to create an informative paragraph that sees them go through steps 1 & 2 of the Writing Process.

OTHER NEWS

After some silent reading, students work was checked to ensure assigned work was done. From this point on, we shared some of our topic sentences to see that they were effective and catchy. We then looked at the remaining four steps in The Writing Process and explained what was done at each step.

Period Two/Three: ELA 20
The first period was given to work on our writing assignment. In the second period, homework assignment based on Fulghum's poem "Credo" were collected and discussed. a good class discussion ensued as to the merit/credit of Fulghum's beliefs

Period Four: History 30
After a Current Events discussion, we reviewed the similarities and differences between First Nations and European decision making processes through a Venn Diagram. Assigned work based on which system each individual would prefer to live in and why was collected. We then looked at relationships with the land and the way(s) the land effects us on a day to day basis. We looked more closely at the First Nations view of the land and the belief that no part of nature is better than another.

Period Five: Math 7
Assignments that were given yesterday were collected and a second, more challenging assignment was given.

Period Six: ELA 10
After a few minutes of reading, students started their work on "The Legend of..." assignment. This is not due on Tuesday as time will be given to complete it.

Period Seven: Math 7
Time was given to complete the assignment given earlier in the day. If completed early, students were to hand it in and enjoy the remainder of the class as free time.

Thursday, September 2nd -- Day Four

Period One: History 30
We started with a brief Current Events discussion. Following that we reviewed material from last time; in particular the reasons why Europeans began arriving in North America. From this point on, we started to look at the differing worldviews between First Nations and Europeans. In particular we looked at the Iroquois Confederacy and "The Great Law". Students were then asked to chart the similarities and differences between the two decision - making processed through use of a Venn Diagram. Once the diagram was complete they were asked to think of which system they would rather live in, and provide an explanation of why they feel this way.

Period Two: ELA 9
Following ten minutes of reading, a quick homework check was done to ensure the concept webs that were due today were completed. We then started to look at the elements required for an effective paragraph starting with the first and probably most important, the topic sentence. After a discussion and some notes thae define what the topic sentence is and what it should accomplish, potential strategies for effective topic sentences were shared with the group. Students were then asked to use the strategies they were given in order to create five effective topic sentences on a topic from the concept webs that were due today. These topic sentences need to be completed for tomorrow.

Periods Three/Four: ELA 20
The first period was given for students to work towards completing the drafts of their paragraphs. If they finished early, they were to start revising their work looking for errors and mistakes that are in need of correcting.
Period Four saw us turn to the first of two themes being studied in ELA; Recollection: A Journey Back. At this point I had the students think back to their days in Kindergarten. What stands out as memories? Did they think this was an important year in their life? Why or why not? Of most importance however was the question asking them what lessons they learned during their Kindergarten experience. This connected to Robert Fulghum's poem "Credo" which essentially is the poets ideas and beliefs. After reading the poem, we were able to establish that Fulghum believes everything you learn in Kindergarten is more important than the acquisition of wisdom, and that if we all thought back to, and acted the way we did in Kindergarten, the world would be a much better place. Students were then asked to respond to the poem, in particular is there any merit to this train of thought? Why? These responses should be done for tomorrow.

Period Five: Math 7
We started the class by going over the six questions given out yesterday. The class did very well, with several students getting them all right. This led to another assignment of twenty questions that are due for tomorrow.

Period Six: ELA 20
This was used as a catch - up period. The emphasis was on making sure each student is caught up in History and English. However, homework in other classes was also done.

Period Seven: ELA 10
We reviewed the activities relating to Pauline Johnson's poem "The Legend of the Qu'Appelle Valley". Initially many students were a little confused as to what took place in the poem. However after taking the time to review as a class and share some individual ideas and interpretations, all students have a clear understanding of the poem and the story behind the naming of the valley. As an extension activity students are to think of a place in Saskatchewan, not necessarily a town or city, and create their own legend as to how that place got its name. These legends will be read orally to the class in the days to come.

Other News:

Nominatons for SRC Executive have now closed. The election will take place tomorrow, and the winners will be announced by AM recess.

Wednesday, September 1st -- Day Three

Period One: ELA 9
After a few minutes of silent reading, to start the class. From that point, the paragraphs that were due today were collected. The paragraphs were an introduction to a paragraph writing unit which we then started by looking at the steps in the Writing Process. We took a close look at step #1 -- Pre - Writing. At this step you think of potential topics, and use a concept web to think of potential ideas that you could write about on that particular topic. For tomorrow they were asked to come up with concept webs, or pre - writing for three potential topics.

Period Three: ELA 20
A homework check was done to ensure the homework (Pre - Writing) was done as was assigned. From this point, students were asked to reduce their list from eight or more to four, and being to draft four paragraphs explaining who and why they would like to have dinner with. The drafts are not due for tomorrow but some progress is expected.

Period Four: ELA 10
After some silent reading, students were given the period to work on the draft of their "Bucket List". These need to be done tomorrow.

Period Five: History 20
After a brief Current Events discussion, the questions from yesterday were marked as a class. We then discussed individually what we would do if we were the Russian leader following the Congress of Berlin in 1878. A lot of good answers came up and ones that were very logical and demonstrated use of knowledge gained in previous classes. Well done!!! We then continued on with our study of events leading up to World War I by looking at Germany and Austria - Hungary's Dual Alliance -- the terms and reasons behind the agreement.

Period Six: ELA 10
We shifted gears from writing and started to look at the first theme of study for the year, "The Unknown". Afer a discussion on what is meant by the term "unknown" we brainstormed some potential topics that might arise in a study of this theme. We also tried our best to define what be felt a legend was. A lot of good ideas came up in this discussion. That led into the introduction of Pauline Johnson's poem "The Legend of the Qu'Appelle Valley". Students are to read this poem and complete three questions for tomorrow.

Period Seven: Math 7
We began by collecting the multiplacation charts that were to be completed for today. We then took a look at the problems that were assigned last day. For the most part, these were very well done, not only to come up with the correct answer but also their ability to explain the steps they took to reach that answer.
We then reviewed long division by doing a couple of examples together. For homework, a short long division assignment was given. This should be done for tomorrow.
