Tuesday, November 30th -- Day Two

Hard to believe it is already the last day of November; the weather may feel like Christmas but the year has gone by too quickly.

Period One: ELA 10
After some silent reading, we discussed the endings that we individually wrote for Liam O'Flaherty's short story "The Sniper". I then read the actual ending to the story which revealed the man on the other side of the street was the sniper's brother!!! This led to a discussion on the challenges that situations like this present one with, regardless of whether or not it is your kin on the other side of the line.
Students were reminded that "My Great Adventure" is due on Friday. Students were assigned Theodore Thomas' short story "Test" which needs to be read for tomorrow

Period Two: History 20
Students were given the second of two periods to complete their Unit One review. Reminder that the exam is this Friday.

Period Three/Four: ELA 9
After some silent reading, we moved on and corrected the Language Power lessons which were assigned yesterday. It seems like reading instructions is starting to hinder our performance at times. Irregardless, after this an assignment was given on Chapter Seven of "The Outsiders". The questions are due tomorrow but not the extensions.

Period Five: ELA 20
This period was used to type one of either their essay on the theme of "To Kill a Mockingbird" which is due Friday or their Autopbiography.

Period Six: History 30
Following a Current Events discussion, we reviewed the material of last week, namely why Canadians started to grow weary of the Americans, yet still were aware of the fact that a relationship with our neighbors was important. All of this discussion led many at the time to start to examine the merits of unifying all of the colonies into one nation. As such we discussed some of the arguments associated with the creation of this nation, namely Macdonalds 'ideal' state and the merits of this state and those opposed to his ideas and their arguments. Students were asked to complete four questions based on a short reading for tomorrow.

Period Seven: ELA 20
Students were given the short story "A Visit to Grandmother". They are to read it and complete questions 1, 2, 5, 7, 8 for tomorrow.

OTHER NEWS:

Basketball Practice today -Senior Boys at 3:30 while the Senior Girls practice in Sturgis today.

Junior teams practice tomorrow.

Tuesday, November 23rd -- Day Four

Period One: History 30
Following a short Current Events discussion, a handout detailing the expectations and requirements for the 'Great Canadian' research assignment was distributed and discussed. A review of how to properly reference certain sources in a bibliography was done. A review of the material that started Unit Two was undertaken, followed by a look at the American Threat to British North America during the mid 1800's.

Period Two: ELA 9
As a homework check, students were asked to write a one paragraph summary of the events of Chapter Five which was to be read for today. Following that, students were assigned Lessons #24, 25 of Language Power. These are to be completed for tomorrow.

Period Three/Four: ELA 20
We started with a Jeopardy! style review of the novel. Congrats to the winners, Skyler Griffith and April Jacquemart. Following that, a brief discussion was had in regards to the five themes that appear in the novel 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. They are (1) Prejudice (2) Growing Up (3) Small Town Life and Social Relationships (4) Justice and (5) Good vs. Evil. Students are to choose one theme and in an essay of no less than 500 words discuss it and how we see it play out in the novel. The essay is tentatively due for next Friday, December 3rd.

Period Five: Math 7
This period was given to complete the assignment given yesterday. The entire assignmnet is due for tomorrow.

Period Six: ELA 20
This is the once in a six day cycle period to work on whatever the students need to be working on.

Period Seven: ELA 10
This was the last class time given this week to work on their Great Adventure.

OTHER NEWS:

Senior Boys Basketball practice is cancelled for today. A meeting of all those interested in playing this year will take place tomorrow morning at 10:30 in Mr. Morin's room. As of right now, I would consider the season to be somewhat in jeopardy.

Junior Teams practice tomorrow after school.

Thursday is Rider Day..wear GREEN!!!

Monday, November 22nd -- Day Three

Welcome to a new week...Grey Cup week which is a great week to be a Rider fan.

Period One: ELA 9
After some silent reading, we discussed Ken Dryden's essay entitled "The Game" from last week. In particular we were seeking to uncover Dryden's message. Once that was done, students were asked to complete the second of two extensions based on Chapter Four of 'The Outsiders' as well as read Chapter 5 for tomorrow.

Period Three: ELA 20
We continued to watch 'To Kill a Mockingbird'

Period Four: ELA 10
After some silent reading, we discussed Christy Brown's essay 'My Left Foot' as well as collected the assignment based on that reading. We also looked briefly at all of the literature we studied under the theme of 'The Unknown' in preparation for the unit exam on Thursday. Lastly students were given a handout which outlined a major assignment they will be working on known as 'My Great Adventure'

Period Five: History 20
After a Current Events discussion we reviewed the material from last week; mainly Karl Marx's theory on Communism. We then moved on to discuss the Revolutions of 1917 as well as the Russian Civil War which was a battle for power between the white and the red.

Period Six: ELA 10
Students were given the period to work on their great adventure.

Period Seven: Math 7
We introduced the concept of a number line and using them to add numbers. After some samples and examples students were assigned Pages 62, 63 & 64 #'s 1 - 11. It is not due for tomorrow as time will be given tomorrow.

OTHER NEWS:

Junior Basketball teams practice today; Senior's tomorrow.

Thursday is RIDER DAY!!!! Wear green to support our favorite team as they go in search of the Grey Cup on Sunday.

Wednesday, November 17th -- Day Six

Period One/Two: ELA 10
After some silent reading, we moved on to briefly discuss the story that was assigned for today, 'My Left Foot' by Christy Brown. We then moved on from this discussion to an assignment in which they were to answer some questions on the essay as well as write a speech as if they were nominating Christy's mother for Mother of the Year Award. The questions and the written speech are due tomorrow.
Students were also given an essay entitled "Paddle to the Amazon" which is the account of a man from Winnipeg who, with his 19 year old son canoed all the way to Brazil, over 20, 000 km in a little over two years. The essay, written as a series of journal articles highlights some of the struggles that the author and his son had to endure and overcome along their journey. Students are to imagine themselves going on an adventure of their choice, and write a series of journal entries similar to the essay read today which will highlight and discuss some of the challenges they feel they might face along the way.

Period Three: ELA 9
After some silent reading, an assignment (questions and extension) were given based on Chapter 4 of 'The Outsiders' which was to be read today. This assignment is due for tomorrow.

Period Six: ELA 10
Work/Reading/Catch Up period.

Thanks to all parents who came out both tonight and last night to discuss their children, school, academics, etc.

Senior Basketball practices start tomorrow; Girls at 4:00 and Boys at 6:00

Intramural Volleyball resumes Friday with Peanut Butter and Jamie vs. Brass.

Tuesday, November 16th -- Day Five

Period One: ELA 9
Following some silent reading, Language Power lessons #22, 23 were corrected. For tomorrow students are to read Chapter Four of 'The Outsiders'.

Period Two/Three: ELA 20
As our reading of the novel 'To Kill a Mockingbird' is completed, we started watching the movie. Both periods were spent watching the film. Those who have not completed reading the novel, it is highly recommended that you do so as depending on the movie to succeed on the exam will be mighty difiicult.

Period Four: History 30
Following a short Current Events discussion we continued with our look at Great Canadians. As such students were given the period to research their chosen Canadian.

Period Five: Math 7
We started by reviewing yesterday's class which introduced integers. We then corrected the assignment from yesterday on Lesson 2.1. The concept of addition of integers was then introduced and Pg. 58/59 #'s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 & 12 were assigned. They are due for Thursday.

Period Six: ELA 10
We collectively brainstormed a list of individuals we are aware of who have overcome some sort of obstacle or challenge to achieve something noteworthy. This will lead into a research assignment at some point in the future. Students were then asked what they believed it meant to 'have faith'. After a short discussion, students were asked to read an essay by Christy Brown entitled "My Left Foot". This is to be read for tomorrow and will provide the students with a tremendous example of not only having faith but also of overcoming something to achieve things one might not think possible.

Period Seven: Math 7
Students were given this period to work on the assignnent that was given in Period Five.

OTHER NEWS:

Tonight is the first night of Parent - Teacher Interviews. They will run from 3:30 - 7:00 in the school gymnasium. Feel free to stop in either tonight or tomorrow (same hours).

Basketball season is underway as the Senior Teams will start practicing on Thursday; Girls are at 4:00 while the Boys are at 6:00

Monday, November 15 -- Day Four

Period One: History 30
After a Current Events discussion, we finished up some notes from last class. The students were then asked to come up with a definition for 'great'. After sharing these definitions and agreeing in principle that great means to be superior in terms of actions or abilities, students were asked to think of what sort of actions could be considered 'great'. From this point, we brainstormed a list of who we consider to be "Great Canadians". Once a list was created, students were to choose one that they will be completing a research essay on.

Period Two: ELA 9
After some silent reading, we discussed the questions based on Chapters 2& 3 of 'The Outsiders'. Language Power Lessons #22, 23 on compound and complex sentences was assigned for tomorrow.

Period Three/Four: ELA 20
Period Three was provided as an opportunity to finish up the daily assignments associated with our study of 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. Period Four saw us read three poems all relating to the idea of home. After each, 'Home Street', 'My Hometown' and 'I Remember (Back Home)' oral questioning and discussion took place. In the end we were able to agree that all of the poems were similar in a certain way; that being as you grow older and attain more wisdom and become more knowledgeable about the world around you, your perceptions and memories of home change, some times for the good and some times for the bad.

Period Five: Math 7
We introduced the concept of Integers. Students were asked to use manipulatives to show certain values of both positivie and negative numbers. They were then asked to complete Pages 54/55 #1, 2, 4a, 5, 6 & 7 for tomorrow.

Period Six: ELA 20
This is our once in a six day cycle read/work/homework/catch up class.

Period Seven: ELA 10
The Time Capsule assignments were collected. We discussed Edgar Allan Poe's poem 'The Raven'. We then initiated our second theme to be studied, Challenges: Opportunities and Obstacles. As such students were asked to brainstorm an individual they believe to have overcome obstacles to acheive something. The example given was Mario Lemieux, a man who overcame cancer to return to the NHL and remain one of the world's greatest hockey players. They are to choose an individual and complete a visual depicting their challenges and achievements.

OTHER NEWS:

Basketball season opens this week. Junior Girls practice today, while the Senior teams start on Thursday.

Friday, November 10 -- Day Three

Period One: ELA 9
Slow gettiing her this morning as the roads were a little tricky this morning. Regardless a quiet morning as all that was assigned was questions for Chapters 2 and 3 of 'The Outsiders'. These are due for Monday.

Period Three/Four: Remembrance Day Service in the Gymasium. A big thanks to the RCMP, Legion and Cadets for being a part of our ceremony. Also, thanks to those studens who volunteered to read either their writing or the writing of others.

Period Five: History 20
We reviewed the highlights of last class; that being the terms of the Treaty of Versailles and the American rejection of this deal. We moved onto the cost of the war, in both human and financial terms. Students were asked to guess the cost in both cases. They were close to the human cost but nowhere close to the financial cost. We then started to look at the situation plaguing Russia at the end of the war. In order for this to occur, we need to go back to the turn of the 20th Century. This was done today as we looked at Tsar Nicholas II, the Russo - Japanese War, and the Russian Revolution of 1905 which included the events of Bloody Sunday. Students were assigned some questions on this material that needs to be done for Tuesday.

Period Six: ELA 10
We had a discussion about Alfred Tennyson's poem 'The Lady of Shallot'. This was a great discussion as a new idea that I had not considered before came up. Good job by all of the students. For Monday, students are to read and analyze Edgar Allan Poe's poem 'The Raven'.

Period Seven: Math 7
We put the finishing touches on the Unit One exam. Unit Two will start on Monday.

Thursday, November 4th -- Day Five

Period One - -ELA 9
After some silent reading, we discussed the journal entry they were assigned yesterday. This assignment was to concentrate on gangs; what they are and a look at the pro's and con's of being involved in a gang. This led to the assigning of the short story "On the Sidewalk Bleeding". This story needs to be read as well as question 1 a,b,c & d done for tomorrow.

Period Two/Three: ELA 20
The first of these periods was spent in the lab where students were to type up either their Remembrance Day essay or, if done, their autobiography.
Period Three saw a discussion on Chapter's 15 & 16 of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and then a continuation of our study of the novel.

Period Four: History 30
We started the class with a review/outline for the Unit One exam which is scheduled for Tuesday, November 9th. When this was completed students were given the option to work on either their propoganda or study for the exam. Unit Two will commence tomorrow but the cutoff for the material on the exam ends with Lord Durham and his recommendations for Upper and Lower Canada.

Period Five: Math 7
As a group corrected the assignment on Page 44, 45 & 46 that was due for tomorrow. Students were then made aware of the fact that the Unit One exam will be Monday, November 8th.

Period Six: ELA 10
Students read quietly for the first ten minutes at which point they were introduced to the culminating assignment for 'The Chrysalids' which is a time capsule. A handout dealing with the specifics that this assignment should include will be provided tomorrow.

Period Seven: Math 7
In advance of the Unit exam on Monday, students were struggling with solving simple equations. As such, we reviewed all four potential equation types you could come across and then assigned sixteen questions that deals with solving equations of all types.

Other News:

Intramural Volleyball tomorrow at noon.

Tomorrow is the FINAL day to buy School Clothing.

Report Card day tomorrow...HOOOORAY!

Tuesday, November 2nd -- Day Three

Period One: ELA 9
After some silent reading, we corrected the Language Power lessons from yesterday. We then reviewed Robert Frost's poem "The Road not Taken" and brainstormed everyday examples of individuals choosing to take the path less travelled. This led to the assigning of the shortest short story ever "Acceptance" along with some response activities. These are due for tomorrow.

Period Three: ELA 20
The first chapters of Part Two of "To Kill a Mockingbird" were discussed in detail. Students were given what was left of the period to read on in the novel. I would strongly recommend reading at home as we are running out of school days to complete the novel and culminating activities.

Period Four: ELA 10
The students sold poppies around town.

Period Five: History 20
We reviewed what realities made life at home so difficult for the civilian population during the war. A handout was then given which discussed three main points from 1917, which is arguably the year in which things started to lean in favor of one side. A series of ideas were presented about these events which students were asked to respond to for the next class.

Period Six: ELA 10
Chapter's Ten and Eleven of "The Chrysalids" were discussed and then we moved onto Chapter's Thirteen and Fourteen. Again, time is running out to complete this novel.

Period Seven: Math 7
Unit One is now complete and as such a practice test was assigned that deals with all ideas dealt with in this unit. The assignment which is NOT due for tomorrow is Pages 44, 45 and 46 #'s 1,2,5,6,7,8,9,11,13,14. Tomorrow afternoon's class will also be given to complete the assignment.

Monday, November 1st -- Day Two

Period One: ELA 10
After some silent reading, students were given the period to complete a series of questions and extending activites on Chapter's 11 & 12 of "The Chrysalids".

Period Two: History 20
We reviewed the specifics of the Battle of the Somme that was discussed last week. We then took a look at some of the ways in which the war effected the civilian populations in both Germany and Britain. Students were given the last fifteen minutes to work on their propoganda assignment.

Period Three/Four: ELA 9
After some silent reading, we moved on to discuss "The Four Voices" which was a series of poems the students had read and responded to in groups on Friday. After a very good discussion we moved onto Robert Frost's poem "The Road not Taken" which was followed by another great discussion about the message Frost was trying to get across to the readers and its relation to our study of finding ourself and our identity. Language Power #21 & 22 were also assigned for tomorrow.

Period Five: ELA 20
As we need to speed up our coverage of the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" students were given the period to read ahead.

Period Six: History 30
Students are working on their propoganda assignment as they think might appear in the troubled 1830's in one of either Upper or Lower Canada.

Period Seven: ELA 20
An assignment based on Chapters 12, 13 & 14 of "To Kill a Mockingbird" was given out. It should be done for tomorrow.

OTHER NEWS:

Congratulations to the Junior Girls Volleyball team for their 2nd place finish at Conferences this weekend. The Junior Boys also attended Conferences, and came up short of a play - off berth finishing third in their pool during Round Robin play.

The Senior Girls also had a great weekend, capturing gold at their annual Snake Creek Classic. They defeated Invermay in the final.

The final total for magazine sales is $14, 153.19.

The next Intramural Volleyball is Friday as Peanut Butter and Jamie take on Awesome Allysor's.

School clothing will be on sale for the rest of the week. See an SRC member if interested.
