Monday, December 13th -- Day Five

Seven more school days after today, but who's counting...

Period One: ELA 9
After some silent reading, we reviewed the format for writing a proper letter. Students then started a Christmas letter writing assignment. The draft of their letters are due for tomorrow.

Period Two/Three: ELA 20
Period Two was in the Computer Lab typing their Autobigraphies. Period Three saw a discussion of the poems read on Friday, "Before Two Portraits of My Mother" and "Graduation Evening". This was a good discussion; several good interpretations and ideas came up.

Period Four: History 30
We started by reviewing the events/occurences surrounding the Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences. We then discussed some of the external forces which helped lead us down the path to Confederation. Students were given a small assignment and extending activity to complete in regards to todays material. The assignment is due for tomorrow while the extensions will be due on Thursday.

Period Five: Math 7
The Unit Reviews were collected. We then looked at time zones around the world, and the differences in time being similar to integers. A small assignment was given using time zones as integers.

Period Six: ELA 10
In conjunction with a reading entitled "Letters from Vietnam", students completed a series of pre - reading and during reading activities. Once the letters had all been read, a couple of post - writing activities were assigned for tomorrow.

Period Seven: Math 7
A Practice Test was given on Unit Two material. The real test will be on Friday.

Wednesday, December 8th -- Day Two

Period One: ELA 10
Following some silent reading, we discussed the poem read yesterday entitled "Fast Break". A lot of good ideas came up in what was a pretty good discussion. We then moved onto the poem "Ex - Basketball Player". Students were asked to read the poem silently, and then as a group we discussed what we know about the poem. Students were then asked to use evidence from the poem, as well as their own thoughts/ideas to determine whether or not they find Flick Webb, the man who the poem is about, to be a winner or loser. They were to provide their opion and explanation in no less than a paragraph. It is due tomorrow.

Period Two: History 20
After a Current Events discussion, we moved onto a quick review of yesterday's class in which we introduced Joseph Stalin. Students were asked to write their thoughts/ideas on how they would ensure they become the leader of the Communisty Party if they were Stalin. These were collected and discussed before moving onto a discussion that revolved around the steps Stalin took to not only gain power, but slowly solidify his position and eliminate any and all threats to his leadership.

Period Three/Four: ELA 9
Following some silent reading, we moved onto correct Lessons #32, and 33 of Language Power. Students were also asked to have read Chapter Nine of 'The Outsiders'. An assignment was given based on this chapter. The questions, as well as the first of the two extending activities are due tomorrow.

Period Five: ELA 20
Students were given the period to work on their Autobiography assignment. We set a date of January 7th for these assignments to be handed in by.

Period Six: History 30
After a short review of previous classes, we moved onto discuss the Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences. One of the issues at the time was Macdonalds idea of 'one government' for all nations. The French and Maritimes were obviously in opposition to this. Students were asked to take on the role of Macdonald: How would you be willing to shift your philosophy in order to get those opposed to join in a potential union. Students were to create solutions to the problem and outline this information in a letter to one of the delegates from either Quebec or the Maritimes.

Period Seven: ELA 20
We collected and discussed the material based on Feldsen's essay "When Does a Boy Become a Man?" We then had a discussion about our parents and our thoughts on both mom and dad at the age of five. This led to a reading of the short story entitled "The Day the Old Man Melted".

OTHER NEWS:

Good luck to the Junior Boys and Girls Basketball teams who play in Canora today.

Tuesday, December 7th -- Day One

Period One: History 20
Students were given the first twenty minutes of class to work on their 'Dictator Assignment'. The premise of the assignment is they seek to become a dictator. They are to determine how they are going to attain the power they crave, as well as discuss what changes they would make in certain areas such as the economy, military, education, and so on which will enable them to maintain power for a long period of time.
We then moved on to introducing Unit Two: The Totalitarian State with an introduction to Joseph Stalin. We discussed his early life, introduction to radical politics and his quest for power of the Communist Party. Students were asked to write a paragraph based on the notion that they are Stalin and they know that Lenin would prefer to see Leon Trotsky take over the party following his death. What would you do????

Period Two: ELA 9
After some silent reading, the questions from Chapter Eight of the Outsiders. The extensions (letter to Johnny's parents) were then collected. Students were asked to read Raymond Souster's poem "Two Prisoners" and complete some questions based on their understanding of the poem.

Period Three: History 30
Following a Current Events discussion, students were given the period to work on their Great Canadian posters. These are due Friday and today was the LAST class time that will be given.

Period Five: Math 7
The assignment on Lesson 2.5 was collected. We then began to review as we prepare for the exam. Today we focused on reviewing addition of integers and a short assignment was given which is due on Friday.

Period Six: ELA 10
After some silent reading, the stories Wilma and Rules of the Game were discussed. A class discussion was then had on challenges associated with playing sports and the pro's and con's of both individual and team sports. In the end students were to read the poem entitled "Fast Break" and answer some questions for tomorrow.

Period Seven: ELA 9
After some silent reading, students were given the following list of activities that they need to be working on:
1) Complete 'Two Prisoners' for tomorrow.

Thursday, December 2nd -- Day Four

Period One: History 30
While this wasn't planned, they seemed so genuinely in need of one last class to work on their "Great Canadian" assignment so they got this period to do so. The assignment is due tomorrow.

Period Two: ELA 9
After some silent reading, some assignments were returned. The students were treated to a Pop - Quiz on 'The Outsiders' to this point. For the most part, these were quite well done. Once students completed the quiz they were asked to read Chapter Eight of the novel.

Period Three/Four: ELA 20
The periods were given to complete the exam on the first theme of study, Recollection. With any luck these could be marked and returned tomorrow.

Period Five: Math 7
As a class, we went over Page 72 #1. We used both a number line and blocks to answer each question. When this was done, Page 72/73 # 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7AB, 8ABC, 11, 12 were assigned. Tomorrow in Period Five students will be given more time to complete this assignment.

Period Six: ELA 20
This is our once in a six day cycle work period.

Period Seven: ELA 10
After some silent reading, we talked about the fact that "My Great Adventure" is due tomorrow. Some students seem to think that this is unreasonable. As such, if they don't want to hand in the assignment for tomorrow, they can submit a one paragraph explanation as to why they are not done and why they are deserving of an extension. The merit of their arguments will determine whether or not they will receive the extension they want. Students were then assigned to read the short story 'Wilma'

OTHER NEWS:

Senior Boys and Girls Basketball Practice today. The Girls go at 3:30 and the Boys at 5:30.

Good Luck to the Senior Girls as they travel to Central Butte this weekend for their first tournament of the year.

For what it's worth...Riders need a Head Coach....here's to hoping it isn't Doug Berry.
