Thursday, September 17 -- Day Two

Period One: History 20
After a short Current Events discussion, we shared our ideas on how Germany could avoid having to fight a two - front war with Russia and France. A lot of good ideas came up; well done. From here we looked at the last of the major alliances leading up to World War I with the England joining France and Russia in the Triple Alliance in 1907.

Period Two: ELA 9
We started with some silent reading, and then moved onto working on our culminating activity as a part of the paragraph writing unit. Each student is to choose a topic, or theme and write a descriptive, narrative, informative and persuasive paragraph on that topic. This morning we worked on Step One of the Writing Process.

Period Three: History 3o
We had a brief Current Events discussion followed by a look at some of the issues that arose with the fur trade as a business, those being the idea of the staples paradigm, the boom and bust markets and resource depletion. These economic realities have their roots in Canada in the fur trade but continue to exist today. We then watched some more of Episode #1 of Canada: A People's History; this time it talked heavily about the actions of Henry Hudson, his discovery of the Bay named for him as well as the mutiny that followed.

Period Five: Math 7
We took one last whirl through the rules of divisibility to ensure all students are familar and comfortable with these rules. A quiz may be coming soon..wink wink.. Secondly we looked at writing to explain our thinking when it comes to mathematics. As such, three problems were assigned where I am looking not only for the correct answer but also a written explanation of how they reached that point.

Period Six: ELA 10
After some silent reading, we collected and discussed at length the mystery that played out in Agatha Christie's murder mystery "The Third Floor Flat". A lot of good detective work done, as many of the students had most of the importance details figured out, if not all of them.

Period Seven: ELA 9
After some silent reading, students were asked to complete Step 1 of the Writing Process. If they chose they were allowed to study for tomorrow's quiz on writing.

I will be out of the building tomorrow, so no posting until Monday.
