Period One: History 30
After a Current Events discussion, we finished up some notes from last class. The students were then asked to come up with a definition for 'great'. After sharing these definitions and agreeing in principle that great means to be superior in terms of actions or abilities, students were asked to think of what sort of actions could be considered 'great'. From this point, we brainstormed a list of who we consider to be "Great Canadians". Once a list was created, students were to choose one that they will be completing a research essay on.
Period Two: ELA 9
After some silent reading, we discussed the questions based on Chapters 2& 3 of 'The Outsiders'. Language Power Lessons #22, 23 on compound and complex sentences was assigned for tomorrow.
Period Three/Four: ELA 20
Period Three was provided as an opportunity to finish up the daily assignments associated with our study of 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. Period Four saw us read three poems all relating to the idea of home. After each, 'Home Street', 'My Hometown' and 'I Remember (Back Home)' oral questioning and discussion took place. In the end we were able to agree that all of the poems were similar in a certain way; that being as you grow older and attain more wisdom and become more knowledgeable about the world around you, your perceptions and memories of home change, some times for the good and some times for the bad.
Period Five: Math 7
We introduced the concept of Integers. Students were asked to use manipulatives to show certain values of both positivie and negative numbers. They were then asked to complete Pages 54/55 #1, 2, 4a, 5, 6 & 7 for tomorrow.
Period Six: ELA 20
This is our once in a six day cycle read/work/homework/catch up class.
Period Seven: ELA 10
The Time Capsule assignments were collected. We discussed Edgar Allan Poe's poem 'The Raven'. We then initiated our second theme to be studied, Challenges: Opportunities and Obstacles. As such students were asked to brainstorm an individual they believe to have overcome obstacles to acheive something. The example given was Mario Lemieux, a man who overcame cancer to return to the NHL and remain one of the world's greatest hockey players. They are to choose an individual and complete a visual depicting their challenges and achievements.
